In Britain, applied linguists began to doubt the efficacy of situational language teaching. This approach is the antithesis of situational language teaching, which emphasizes learning through text and prioritizes grammar over communication. They need to know certain vocabulary words, certain structures of grammar, etc.

It can zone in on one specific aspect of grammar or vocabulary, while still being a primarily communicative activity and giving the students communicative benefits.

Opinion sharing is a great way to get more introverted students to open up and share their opinions. Did they use the LLS that was modelled in the task they were to perform? In this case, the way LLS may be inter-connected becomes very clear.

Education was a high priority for the Council of Europe, and they set out to provide a syllabus that would meet the needs of European immigrants.

The class is paired up. If a student does not feel like their opinion is respected by the instructor or their peers, then they will not feel comfortable sharing, and they will not receive the communicative benefits of this activity.

Language Learning Strategies: An Overview for L2 Teachers

Yet while teachers hope to motivate our students and enhance their learning, professionally we must be very clear not to manipulate them in the process, recognising that ultimately learning is the student's responsibility4.

These methods assumed that students were aiming for mastery of the target language, and that students were willing to study for years before expecting to use the language in real life. One example from a conversation text in the series states: For a more detailed description of this classroom activity and a copy of the questionnaire and test, see Lessard-Clouston Oral activities are popular among CLT teachers, as opposed to grammar drills or reading and writing activities, because they include active conversation and creative, unpredicted responses from students.

After each class, for example, one might ponder the effectiveness of the lesson and the role of LLS and LLS training within it. Because there is not such agreement, students may be seen to be in possession of "communicative competence" without being able to make full, or even adequate, use of the language.

If you have found 10 different LLS for writing explicitly used in your text, for example, you could highlight these as you go through the course, giving students clear examples, modelling how such LLS may be used in learning to write or in writing, and filling in the gaps with other LLS for writing that are neglected in the text but would be especially relevant for your learners.

Communicative language teaching

An informal log of such reflections and one's personal assessment of the class, either in a notebook or on the actual lesson plans, might be used later to reflect on LLS training in the course as a whole after its completion.

One way to do so is to consider your lesson plans. This method was much more clinical in nature and relied less on direct communication. As Graham declares, LLS training "needs to be integrated into students' regular classes if they are going to appreciate their relevance for language learning tasks; students need to constantly monitor and evaluate the strategies they develop and use; and they need to be aware of the nature, function and importance of such strategies" p.
